“The Home Owner’s Association states NO LINE DRYING.”
I gasped upon hearing it. We took out a one year lease on a house in a splendid location but there was one catch. This silly, ridiculous idea that line drying is an eyesore. How can such regulations be enforced when climate change is so heavy in the zeitgeist that you can practically see it swaying on a clothes line? The biggest surprise is that we’re in Europe and thankfully, everybody puts their extensive drying racks outside the second the sun peaks out from behind the ever-present clouds here in Ireland.
Growing up in the States, we were the only family that ever lined dried. To this day, I can’t get over eco warriors in California who proudly drive their hybrid cars but run a clothing dryer in hot weather.

In Europe it’s common to air dry even in wet climates and many people don’t own an electric dryer. A clothing rack is used inside for nights and rainy days, and during the weather reports on the radio, they alway include what kind of “drying day” it’s going to be.
I could wax poetic about the benefits of line drying: it’s green, more economical, and it’s better for the longevity of the clothes. I accept it takes more time but once you get into a rhythm of it, it’s no big deal. And as far as the ‘eyesore’ argument goes: I think these pictures make for a good defense.
