A place of snow and sand, of pine trees and cacti, of waves and rapids, of dunes and mountains, of gold and granite. California is truly a place of many things. Geographically, there are mountains, deserts, redwood forests, flower-covered meadows, beaches and fertile valleys. Culturally there are farms, ranches, vineyards, silicon valley, Hollywood, cosmopolitan cities, scenic coastal communities and suburban sprawl.
I spent a lifetime growing up in the foothills of the coastal range, south of San Francisco with many spells spent in Groveland, forty minutes from the gates of Yosemite in Tuolumne County and six years living near the ocean in La La Land.
No pictures could ever do it justice or describe the variety of characters sharing this space, whose diversity (whether categorised as topographical, cultural, religious, or political) is as sharp in contrast as the elements of nature that set its stage.
