My dad was a private pilot and discovered Groveland in the mid 1980s while flying around. A contractor by trade, he decided to build a home that he hoped to retire in. He bought a lovely site in a private community with a lake and a golf course. Over the next twenty years, I had the privilege of visiting this place. On its spacious deck, I was proposed too, had many lovely weekends with friends, and proofread the final words of my husband’s dissertation as he finished it. Deer visited frequently and a buck even lived in the shelter of the wood shed.
Its location close to Yosemite and the Gold Country was ideal and we made the most of it, taking in the park during all seasons and visiting the trains at Jamestown, the historic town of Columbia–a complete homage to the 19th century and where bits of High Noon was shot. The area is as rich in history as it is in gold and nature.
