Dublin

I’ve never walked around Dublin as a tourist and therefore I don’t have many pictures of its notable or recognisable sites. I lived here for a year and spent another year traveling up during the week for work, escaping back to the West on the weekends. It used to take us four hours to drive to Dublin or three hours via the train. Now, with the better roads, we can do it in 2.5 hours.

Dublin has a great tradition of naming its statues. Molly Malone is known as the Tart with the Cart and the new Spire, built for the Millennium, has been coined ‘The Stiffy in the Liffy’ or ‘The Stiletto in Ghetto.’

The Dead Zoo

It’s officially called the Natural History Museum and it is as much a museum to a Victorian Museum as it is an educational tool for learning about zoology. It’s easy to imagine you’ve stepped off the Tardis when walking through the sloped wood floors and looking into the glass eyes of taxidermed animals captured from around the world. The collection is impressive but the methods by which is was procured–not politically correct by today’s standards. Nevertheless, it’s popular with families and tourist wanting that Victorian experience. And I must admit, I find the bear intimidating even if he’s been dead for over a century.

It was used in the series Penny Dreadful not too long ago.
