The air is as grimy as the people are stylish. Never have I seen so many well-dressed men and women. The subway was a pleasure to ride just to watch these sleek-haired fashionistas preening in their finery. It’s said, they take their cues from the Peacocks on the Borromean Islands. Now, in fairness, not every single person puts on the ritz. I always spied was an even assortment of tourists, students and those sensible dressing-for- comfort-types in the mix even if they did fade into obscurity behind the flash of the designer denizens.
Even if I didn’t need to be anywhere near the Duomo, I always went to the square to take it in anyway. Starting in 1386, it was over six hundred years in the making and boasts an excellent museum devoted to its history, art and architecture. Climbing to the top offers not only amazing views but also an opportunity to see its incredible detail.
Elaborate and domineering, the Duomo is inarguably the grandest peacock of all.
