A surprise millions of years in the making
There are hundreds of tiny inlets along Galway Bay offering sandy spits, grassy slopes, intriguing rock pools, and piles of limestone. One Sunday afternoon, some neighbours suggested we take a different route from our usual loop. It was a magic afternoon with amazing light and the discoveries we made are something I won’t ever forget.
First, we met some friendly horses who followed us as far as they could. Second, we found a stretch of beach peppered with rocks that were perfect for hopping along.

We then stumbled across a major discovery: a large piece of the limestone rock had broken off and revealed a trove of crystals. I adopted this route as my nightly sojourn from this point on, while I was living out in Renville. However, each week, the trove dwindled as word got out and treasure hunters arrived with picks and bags. After a month, there was nothing left so I’m glad I took these pictures.
